Overall Analysis of 225 Complaints Received in 2nd Quarter

Explanatory notes:

  • There were a total of 225 enquires received in this quarter with the following break down:
  • 38 complaints fell within jurisdiction
  • 43 were classified under Watching Brief
  • 98 complaints were classified as "Enquiries" because complainants did not follow through with formally lodging the complaint at the commission
  • 2 complaints fell out of juridiction
  • In 44 cases, the Commission advised Complainants that they had reasonable Alternative Remedies that they could pursue before the Commission would examine the complaint

Update on complaints relating to December 5th 2006 events

The Fiji Human Rights Commission releases up-dated information on complaints lodged with the Commission relating to December 5 th 2006 events, as follows:

•  Total number of 'within jurisdiction' complaints related to December 5 th events received by the Commission- December 2006- June 2007 = 18.

2. Total number of complaints resolved by the Commission = 5

3. Files still open = 13

•  referred to police for forensic investigation and report. FHRC maintain watching brief

4. Of 18 'within jurisdiction' files, following sections of the Constitution were invoked:

•  Section 22 = 1

•  Section 25 = 16

•  Section 34 = 1

Note: It was last reported that the Commission had received 20 cases. One complainant had taken a complaint form but later used an 'Alternative Remedy' while the other complaint was resolved through a phone call from the Commission.
