Activities in Brief

Senior Education Officer Reggie Dutt and Cameraman Laisiasa Rogoyawa attended an "Introduction to Lighting Techniques" workshop conducted by DOP Jason Hargreaves hosted by the University of the South Pacific from May 1 st - 3rd. Both participants agree that the workshop has been very useful especially for the work they do at the Commission. The Commission would like to thank USP Media Centre and its Director Melanie Guiney, for organising the course and also for kindly sponsoring one of the participants from the Commission.

To celebrate World Media Freedom Day on May 3rd, Media/Promotions Officer Erica Lee was invited by the University of the South Pacific Journalism Programme to be part of a panel of speakers on the topic 'Working in a coup environment'. The panel consisted of three other speakers, namely Naziah Ali (former Fiji TV reporter), Tara Chetty (Fiji Women's Rights Movement) and Shane Hussein (Fiji TV reporter)

Manager Promotions Agnes Harm and Media/Promotions Officer Erica Lee attended a Career Expo from May 30 th - 1 st June at Suva Grammar School. Close to 3000 students from around Suva passed through the FHRC booth collecting over four boxes of brochures, Rights Quarterly newsletters, posters, and Annual Reports.
Being the first contact point of the Commission, Kara Bibi, the Commission's Receptionist /Typist attended a Training and Productivity Authority of Fiji course on Telephone Etiquette on May 30th.
Manager Complaints Joseph Camillo has embarked on an in-house training for all staff. The course is titled Time Management and Organisational skills course hosted. The evaluation forms for the course filled out by participants showed its popularity.
On June 7 th "Women and Children" desk Officer Sovanatabua Colavanua was invited by Bainivalu Primary School to speak on Corporal Punishment. Mrs Colavanua spoke on the landmark case, Naushad Ali who was sentenced to five years imprisonment and 6 strokes of the birch, in which the Commission made a submission that corporal punishment was degrading and inhumane. In attendance were teachers from Bainivalu Primary School, Bawani Dhayal Primary and Nakasi Secondary School.
Legal Officer (Litigation) Sovanatabua Colavanua was appointed Secretary of the National Coordinating Committee of Children under the Sub- Legal Committee that looks after the enacting of legislation, submitting laws that affect children in Fiji, criminal records of children and reactivation of the juvenile workgroup and sub-committee.
Complaints Investigations Resolutions Officer (Unfair Discrimination) Swasti Chand, was invited by Communications Fiji Limited vernacular talk back show Radio Sargam to talk on the Bill of Rights, Human Rights and the role of the Commission. The show received many inquires and callers who wished to know more about their rights.

Staff Movements

 

Sonny Vikash Chandra joined the Commission in May as the new Assistant Research Officer. Chandra holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Management and Public Administration from the University of the South Pacific

 

Bindula Devi (former Legal Officer Complaints) was appointed Senior Legal Officer for the Policy Analysis Unit in May

 

Marama Tubuna has moved from Senior Legal Officer (Race Relations) to become Senior Legal Officer (Litigation)
