Press Release - December 12, 2006

Investigation of allegation of human rights violations

The Fiji Human Rights Commission will investigate all allegations of human rights violations reported by the NGO Community on their own behalf or on behalf of others. Under the Human Rights Commission Act, the Commission must investigate all complaints or allegations of violations. Investigation is mandatory under the Act unless the complainant has another avenue of redress.

The Commission has noted the concerns of the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre about the reported threats made against UNDP officer Imrana Jalal and Fiji Women's Rights Movement Coordinator Virisila Buadromo. It has requested the Police, as the appropriate authority, to investigate the threats and report to the Commission at the earliest opportunity as this is a Police matter.

The Fiji Human Rights Commission will accept all complaints from the general public and will take them up with the appropriate authorities if a violation is found. The Commission will adhere to its constitutional mandate to protect the rights of everyone in Fiji .
