Press Release - October 3, 2002

Death Penalty

The Human Rights Commission today commended the Government on its pledge to abolish the death penalty for crimes dealt with under military law.

The Chairperson of the Commission, the Hon Justice Kepa, said; “I welcome the Hon Attorney General’s announcement that the Government will introduce legislation to abolish capital punishment under military law. This is the logical extension of the recent abolition of that penalty under civilian law. The imposition of the death penalty is widely regarded as inconsistent with modern international human rights law. It is also probably inconsistent with the Fiji Constitution. The Government’s recent announcement is a commendable step toward consistency between Fiji’s domestic laws, its Constitution and contemporary international law”
