National Plan of Action

"Human Rights Education in Fiji - Towards a National Plan of Action"

In a first of its kind effort to create a human rights culture in Fiji through a process of education, the Fiji Human Rights Commission is inviting written or oral submissions from the public for a National Plan of Action for Human Rights Education in Fiji.

"This is line with the resolutions of a workshop held by the Commission in partnership with the Fiji Teachers Confederation in December last year. We hope that human rights education will become a part of the formal curriculum in schools in the very near future and that is why members of the public are urged to submit their views on a plan of action," said Pio Rokosuka, Education/Training Officer of the Fiji Human Rights Commission.

"Submissions can be made on the need for human rights education, the current status of non-formal and formal human rights education in Fiji, suggestions for improvement, education for special needs and any other recommendations people would like to make on this very important topic."

"Submissions can be made in any of the national languages of Fiji to the Commission by 31st July, 2002," said Rokosuka.

The Commission is carrying out this work in partnership with Fiji Teachers Confederation, formal and non-formal educational institutions, other stakeholders and society groups.

This is line with the Fiji Human Rights Commission's goal of helping to build a just society where everyone is aware of, and can realize, their rights under the Bill of Rights, the human Rights Commission Act and the International Human rights Covenants and Conventions.
