Disciplined Services Workshop

The Fiji Human Rights Commission held a workshop this week for the Disciplined Services on the subject of National Security and Human Rights.

The Workshop was conducted by the staff of the Commission for the senior-most officers of the Disciplined Services, the Fiji Military Forces, the Prisons, Police and the Fiji Navy. Among the senior officers attending were the Commander of the Military Forces, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, Commander of the Fiji Navy, Mosese Semi, the Commissioner of Prisons, Mr Aisea Taoka, and the Director Crime Support Services, Fiji Police Force, Waisea Kau.

The one-day workshop discussed topics such as national security and human rights, state necessity, code of conduct for law enforcement officers, the concept of human rights and human rights in domestic and international law. Resource persons at the workshop were Mr Myint Zan of the University of the South Pacific, an expert on international human rights law, and Tania Flood from the Asia Pacific Forum for National Human Rights Institutions.

The Workshop resulted in the attached resolutions, adopted by all participants at the closing session.
